John “Toby” Burke joins NAIOP as Senior Director of State and Local Affairs, June 4, 2008
Washington, D.C. – The National Association of Industrial and
Office Properties (NAIOP) has appointed John “Toby”
Burke as Senior Director of State and Local Affairs, effective
immediately.
Burke will support NAIOP’s advocacy efforts and serve as a resource to NAIOP chapters at the state and local levels. Burke will work with NAIOP chapters on their state level lobbying efforts and “Day at the Capitol” events, help develop coalitions to assist on important state and local level advocacy efforts and help chapters in developing their government affairs programs. Burke will report to Aquiles Suarez, vice president for government affairs.
“Toby’s qualifications and deep knowledge of state and local government will be an important asset to our association” said NAIOP President Thomas J. Bisacquino. “His background in working with state and local officials, as well as his understanding of issues important to the real estate industry, will be beneficial to our members in advancing their public policy agenda and grassroots efforts at the state and local level.”
Burke comes to NAIOP after having served in the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs as a special assistant to the president. He was the White House liaison with mayors, county commissioners, state attorneys general and other state and local elected officials. Burke also served as national director of government affairs for the Save a Life Foundation, and most recently worked as chief advisor to Virginia State Senator Ralph Smith. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Richmond and a law degree from Ohio Northern University.
“I am very pleased to join NAIOP and become a part of the government affairs team,” said Burke. “I look forward to assisting the chapters on state and community issues and expanding NAIOP’s presence before public policy groups and coalitions.”
